Pigeon Island National Park

 

Located just 1 km off the coast of Nilaveli, Pigeon Island National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful marine sanctuaries and a must-visit destination on the east coast. Famous for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and rich marine biodiversity, the island is a paradise for snorkeling, diving, and nature lovers. 

The national park consists of two small islands — Large Pigeon Island and Small Pigeon Island — surrounded by shallow coral reefs that are home to colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, blacktip reef sharks, and over 100 species of coral. The island gets its name from the rock pigeons that inhabit the area. 

Visitors can reach the island by a short boat ride from Nilaveli Beach. The calm, warm waters make it ideal for beginner snorkelers as well as experienced divers. The best time to visit is generally from April to October when the sea is clearer and conditions are calmer.
